Numerous rappers, both male and female, have made a name for themselves in the German hip-hop scene over the years. The genre has now fully arrived in the mainstream and dominates the German charts. But who are among the most influential German-speaking rappers?
Shirin David
Shirin David is an indispensable part of the rap scene. With around 6.5 million Instagram followers, she is one of the most influential female rappers in German-speaking countries. Barbara Shirin Davidavičius gained fame through the YouTube platform, where her lifestyle channel was among the most popular in all of Germany. In 2015, she released her first pop song, „Du liebst mich nicht,“ with Ado Kojo. Her style has since shifted significantly towards rap, which she combines with pop elements. Songs like „Gib ihm“ and „Bauch Beine Po“ regularly land in the German charts. On her Instagram account, she spoke of having „changed German rap forever“ with „Gib ihm.“.
Luciano
One person who has already been in the studio with Shirin David is Luciano. On Spotify, with around 6.5 million monthly listeners, he is among the most listened-to German rappers currently. GQ Magazine Luciano was named „Musician of the Year“ in 2024. In it, he was described as the “King of Drill.“ Drill, a subgenre of rap, originates from the USA and is also spreading in the United Kingdom. The lyrics and melodies are often dark and underscored with deep bass. Luciano's rough voice is often complemented by melodic hooks.
Peter Fox
Hardly any German-speaking artist shaped the years from the 2000s to the 2010s like Peter Fox. The Berlin-based artist had been performing with the reggae group Seeed since the late 1990s. His first solo album, „Stadtaffe,“ released in 2008, sold 1.5 million copies and achieved 15 gold certifications. His second solo album, which came out about 15 years later, also reached number one on the German charts. The Berlin native continues to rely on dancehall and reggae influences, underscored by a wide range of brass and string instruments. His lyrics reflect urban life.

When talking about German rap, one must not forget a true veteran of the scene. Sido, who began his career with the label Royal Bunker, constantly reinvents himself, both musically and offstage, and has managed to remain relevant for decades. He initially made a name for himself with provocative street rap, but gradually his lyrics became softer and he evolved towards the mainstream – collaborating with artists such as Mark Forster and Andreas Bourani, among others. His album 30-11-80 from 2013, a tribute to his birthday, held on 27 weeks on the German album charts, sold 225,000 copies, and achieved platinum status.
Bushido
After more than 20 years in the rap business, Bushido announced both his last album and his last tour. Recently, the 47-year-old postponed the release of his album. With his hard sounds, he significantly shaped the development of German rap. His style is less technically playful, but rather direct, provocative, and confrontational.
Currently, he's also making a little money on the side as a judge on the newly revamped RTL show DSDS (Deutschland sucht den Superstar). His tracks „Panamera Flow“ and „Sonnenbank Flavour“ will likely still be playing in clubs, karaoke bars, and cars even after his career ends.
Capital Bra
Capital Bra became known through the now-discontinued rap format „Rap on Wednesday“, which he also won. One of his verbal sparring matches reached 12 million clicks on YouTube. This was followed by the rapid rise of the now 31-year-old. Little by little, the rapper continued to develop. Thematically and melodically, his songs became softer, dealing with family themes and loyalty, underscored by sung hooks. With 22 number-one hits, the rapper is not only one of the most successful German-speaking rappers but also one of the most successful musicians across genres.

Thanks to his documentary, Haftbefehl is currently experiencing a real hype within the TikTok community, as well as among hip-hop connoisseurs. His style is attributed to street rap. However, his lyrics go far beyond that, usually being a conglomerate of German, Kurdish, and Arabic. His direct and confrontational language is polarizing and repeatedly crosses the boundaries of street rap into the pop-cultural cosmos. This allows him to reach people from all social classes. The track „Kids know who the boss is“shaped youth language so strongly that Idiot which was chosen as the youth word of the year 2013. Part of the album „Blockplatin,“ on which the song is, was placed on the index in 2015 due to „advocating criminal life.“ Furthermore, the Offenbach native released numerous features with rappers such as the late Xatar, Marteria, and the American Gucci Mane.

RAF Camora
From the streets to the charts. This motto has always been considered a recipe for success in German rap. While many are accused of rapping about this lifestyle without living it, Raf Camora is not one of them – in interviews and songs, he repeatedly talks about his past as a drug dealer. He is now one of the commercially most successful artists in the scene.
With songs like „Ohne mein Team“ and „Palmen aus Plastik,“ the rapper, along with his colleague Bonez MC from „187 Strassenbande,“ achieved cult status - even beyond German-speaking borders. His songs are not purely punchline rap, but rather focus on melodic rhythms that convey the feeling of a Caribbean summer day.
Kool Savas
The self-proclaimed „King of Rap“ is considered one of the most important pioneers of German rap. Without Kool Savas, the scene would not be what it is today. At the beginning of his career, he rapped under the pseudonym Jokes in English, but then started rapping in German. Savas is considered one of the technically strongest rappers in numerous hip-hop forums. His complex rhyme schemes are paired with US influences. His first solo album in 2002 remained in the Top 10 of the German charts for 17 weeks. Numerous rap colleagues like Curse praise him as one of the best and most important German rappers of all time.
Samy Deluxe
In numerous Reddit forums, discussions about the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in German rap are taking place. One name that repeatedly comes up: Samy Deluxe. The Hamburg native significantly shaped the 2000s with socially critical songs like „Weck mich auf“ (Wake Me Up). He is still relevant to the scene today. Like Savas, he relies on complex rhymes, often delivered in double-time passages. In 2020, he performed at Red Bull Soundclash with Afrob and Eko Fresh against the New generation (LGoony, Soufian, and Crack Ignaz). The three veterans represented the role of the old guard of German rap. The comments under the videos are clear: „Give the guys a get-well-soon card. Because Samy destroyed them!“Wrote a YouTube user.
Who belongs to the best is subjective and can change from time to time. In addition to the ten listed stars, there are others who some would consider among the best. These include Bonez MC, Apache 207, Xatar, SSIO, or Azad. Or even some rappers who are on their way to becoming so: OG Keemo, Ikkimel, Nina Chuba, or Nura.
