Cowboys, Revolvers, and Capitalism – The Western Shows That All Order Is Based on Violence

What do Western films have to do with politics? At first glance, not much. The Western is considered by many to be a dusty genre for old white macho men who like to see themselves as lone cowboys in the Wild West. But that does the Western an injustice. Because at its core, the genre deals with the fundamental question of political philosophy: how a new political order can emerge in a place without state, law, and order – namely through violence.

Westerns deal with the emergence of political order

In his book „Hollywood Westerns and American Myth“ He describes three fundamental motifs of the Western film: the founding crisis of the liberal state, the question of the legitimate monopoly on violence, and the impossibility of establishing order solely through institutions.

Where there is no state, the Wild West begins.

Pippin's argument is based on a simple but crucial observation: the Western does not just happen to be set in the 19th-century American West. It is set there because that is where the liberal rule of law does not yet exist. There is still No functioning justice system, no reliable monopoly on violence and no community that had already internalized state authority. The Western depicts the state at the moment of its inception.

Western films address one of the most fundamental questions of political philosophy: Who is legitimately allowed to use violence, and why? According to Pippin, Westerns point to a paradox that underlies every political order: for law and order to emerge, someone must act outside the law. This is typically the figure of the cowboy. He kills in order to establish a society in which killing will then be prohibited.

Max Weber once defined the modern state as an institution that claims a monopoly on legitimate physical force. The Western shows that this monopoly must be fought for.

The hero has no place in the new order — and therefore rides off into the sunset

The Italo-Western, which gained popularity in the 1960s primarily through Sergio Leone, is to the classic Hollywood Western what a deconstruction is to the original. While Hollywood Westerns tend to justify and mythologize the hero's violence, the Italo-Western displays it in all its brutality. The heroes are no longer moral authorities, but driven individuals, opportunists, or simply survivors.
