Article series: Right-wing populism explained – with international examples

submitted by: AuntieKante • is implemented by: Gregor Metz June 17, 2026
An example of right-wing populism in Western states is the blanket rejection of Islam, as seen here in an anti-mosque demonstration by the civic movement „pro Köln“ in 2008: "Saxon courage stops Muslim flood"

Right-wing populism shapes the politics of many countries today. But what exactly is right-wing populism? What characteristics do right-wing populist movements share, how do they differ, and why are they often so successful?

The article series aims to explain the term in an understandable way and show what right-wing populism looks like in practice using international examples: from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Germany, to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), Marine Le Pen in France, and Viktor Orbán in Hungary, to Donald Trump in the USA and Nayib Bukele in El Salvador.

This will highlight typical argumentation patterns, perceived enemies, communication strategies, and political goals – as well as criticism of right-wing populist movements from political science and democracy research. The aim is an objective and easily understandable introduction to one of the most important political phenomena of our time.
